Cycling Along The Way...

Riders of the wheel. Racers, Roadies, Mountain bikers, Touring cyclists, Commuters, and others. Diamond frames, recumbents, trikes, and more. Sharing a web of connections often misunderstood or unappreciated by those who don't ride. Herewith, my attempt to share some of the more rational thoughts that flit around inside my head while bicycling, knocking back a brew or three, or just thinking about life. Reviews of bicycles, gear, touring, and more, plus some unsolicited posts about people, politics, and philosophy. Other things, too. Me: retired, gave up my TV in 1988, avid cyclist, several cross country tours completed with more to come. Your thoughts?

Gila Wilderness Forest Fires 2012

Well, this year's fire season has started with a bang.  In Willow Creek, which is East of Glenwood, which is 64 miles northwest of Silver City, a fire has been burning out of control since May 9.  The Baldy fire and the Whitewater fire (May 16th), both started by lightning, merged and has consumed about 110 square miles (70,500 acres..about 50% of what the Las Conchas fire of 2011) of National Forest/Wilderness.  It has tripled in size just in the past 24hrs.  And there is no end in sight.  It is headed in a northeasterly direction and very close to Mogollon, NM.  Willow Creek is a small summer community.  High winds, 35mph+, have added to the fire and hampered any efforts to put the fire out.

We've only had two nights where the smoke was evident north of Silver City and no real issues with the smoke since the wind has not been blowing in this direction.  Fortunately for us.  Albuquerque, on the other hand, has been seeing quite a bit of smoke from this fire.  Hot, dry, and windy forecast does not make for a promising effort in bringing this fire under control.  At this point, it is 0% under control.
