Cycling Along The Way...

Riders of the wheel. Racers, Roadies, Mountain bikers, Touring cyclists, Commuters, and others. Diamond frames, recumbents, trikes, and more. Sharing a web of connections often misunderstood or unappreciated by those who don't ride. Herewith, my attempt to share some of the more rational thoughts that flit around inside my head while bicycling, knocking back a brew or three, or just thinking about life. Reviews of bicycles, gear, touring, and more, plus some unsolicited posts about people, politics, and philosophy. Other things, too. Me: retired, gave up my TV in 1988, avid cyclist, several cross country tours completed with more to come. Your thoughts?

Whitewater-Baldy Fire 2012. Biggest in NM History.

This is now the largest forest fire in New Mexico's recorded history and it is huge...approximately 300 square miles and more than 190,000 acres has burned and/or is on fire.  It is burning in all directions and is 5% under control, which is minuscule.  Here's an article with the recent info as of today: Firehouse News

To put it in perspective, however, here are the stats for the 2011 Wallow Fire that started in Arizona by two men who failed to properly extinguish their campfire: 831 square miles; 537,900 acres.  Almost three times as large as the Whitewater-Baldy Fire is at present.  Here's info on that fire:  Wallow Fire 2011

The air quality in Silver City has been fairly good, but there have been days with considerable smoke and we've had to keep the windows closed.  Fortunately, we live in an old adobe brick house with 12' ceilings that maintains a cooler temperature and we have ceiling fans to move the air around.  News reports are indicating this fire could continue to burn through July/2012.  So much for a good summer.

For our friends, Roger & Katie Skaggs, who live in Glenwood, which is only 6 miles from the fire, life has not been great.  Their son, Kyle, operates an organic farm in Pleasonton, just south of Glenwood, and I imagine he's not enjoying it either.

A tune to exit with: Eric Burdon and The Animals when they were just called "The Animals"...singing "House of The Rising Sun".
